DESCRIPTION:Long before the modern Civil Rights Movement\, W. Miller Barbour (1908–1957) dedicated his life to advancing racial equality and human rights. A Middletown native and Elizabethtown College graduate\, Barbour rose from local roots to become a pioneering civil rights leader\, serving with the Urban League in Denver and Los Angeles. Through advocacy\, community organizing\, and interracial dialogue\, he expanded opportunities for African Americans decades before the landmark victories of the 1960s. This presentation explores Barbour’s remarkable journey from central Pennsylvania to the forefront of early civil rights activism and examines the enduring legacy of a forgotten champion for equality. \nEric Schubert is a public historian\, genealogist\, and forensic genetic genealogist as seen on Good Morning America and more. He serves on the Executive Committee of the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County and is a White House Historical Association Next-Gen Leader. Schubert earned his M.A. in History at Millersville University. He is part of the research team which contributed to the award-winning documentary The Prospect for Freedom: W. Miller Barbour’s Human Rights Journey and organized the W. Miller Barbour Lecture Series alongside Abigail Sholes\, which seeks to reintroduce Barbour’s legacy to communities across Pennsylvania.

In this course\, you’ll learn how to calculate the rain runoff volume of impervious surfaces (roof\, driveway\, etc.) and how to transform your stormwater chaos into a creative conservation landscaping project. Participants will practice the math calculation skills on-site at Tec Centro. \nParticipants will receive the planning tools needed to navigate their stormwater issue with more insight and ease! \n \nThe Lancaster Conservancy has protected over 11\,000 acres of natural lands\, which are critically important to supporting biodiversity. Smaller patches of native habitats spread throughout urban landscapes are also essential to creating corridors of habitat – food and refuge – for wildlife. This is why we are offering our Habitat Advocate classes at Tec Centro in Lancaster City. \nThe cost of the Habitat Advocate classes covers instructor fees. She has a master’s degree in Environmental Education\, 7-12 Biology Teaching Certification\, and participated in Cornell University’s Civic Ecology program. \nElyse works alongside homeowners in a participatory approach to their gardening for wildlife needs\, infusing educational opportunities during the design\, installation\, and stewarding process. SUMMARY:Birding for Everyone: An Accessible Experience
DESCRIPTION:Whether you use a mobility aid or prefer a slower pace\, this birding hike is built to meet you where you are.\n\n\nBird observation is one of the most accessible ways that we can experience nature and wildlife. During this event\, participants will have an opportunity to learn more about bird habitat on the universally accessible trail at Mill Creek Falls Nature Preserve. This trail welcomes folks with mobility challenges and offers chances to see a variety of birds including woodpeckers\, songbirds and raptors that fly along the Susquehanna River. We will review birding basics\, with binoculars available for those who would like to use them\, and help with basic identification of common birds along the way. \nWhat to Expect and How to Prepare: The lollipop-shaped trail travels along the top of a heavily forested ridge. It has little elevation change and is about a mile in total. This crushed stone trail is universally accessible so all visitors\, including those with strollers\, wheelchairs\, or other mobility devices\, are able to experience the preserve. We will move at a pace that is comfortable for all participants and maximizes bird observation. \nThere is an accessible port-a-john available on site. Please dress appropriately for the weather and bring water to drink\, any snacks you may need\, and pertinent personal first aid. \nThis event is recommended for ages 10 and up (participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult). \nEvent Leader: Sarah Gotwols\, Interpretive Ranger with Lancaster Conservancy and resident bird nerd\, is a Lancaster County native who has spent countless hours observing birds in their natural habitat along the Susquehanna River. \nRefund Policy: These events often sell out.
