Spring Ephemeral Wildflowers Hike at Shenks Ferry Wildflower Preserve

April 18 @ 9:00 am - 11:00 am
Explore Shenks Ferry Wildflower Preserve, a world-renowned site for spring ephemeral wildflowers, on this interpretive hike.

Shenks Ferry Wildflower Preserve is a world-renowned site for spring ephemeral wildflowers. The preserve contains 70 species of wildflower, many of which bloom in early spring before the forest canopy leafs out as part of their strategy to capitalize on sunlight availability. They do all of their growing and reproduction during the time when sunlight reaches the forest floor. This hike will explore the incredible beauty of Shenks Ferry. Participants will learn to identify common spring ephemeral wildflowers and explore their fascinating ecology.

What to Expect and How to Prepare: This will be a 2-mile out-and-back hike on a gravel and dirt trail. The trail surface is mostly smooth, but there are a few short rocky sections and slight elevation changes. This event is for ages 8 and up (participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult). There is a port-a-john available on site. Hikers should dress for the weather, wear comfortable shoes and bring drinking water.

Where to Meet: At the Shenks Ferry Wildflower Preserve trail kiosk, just past the yellow gate off the parking area.
