SUMMARY:Spring Ephemeral Wildflowers Hike at Shenks Ferry Wildflower Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Explore Shenks Ferry Wildflower Preserve\, a world-renowned site for spring ephemeral wildflowers\, on this interpretive hike.\n\n\nShenks Ferry Wildflower Preserve is a world-renowned site for spring ephemeral wildflowers. The preserve contains 70 species of wildflower\, many of which bloom in early spring before the forest canopy leafs out as part of their strategy to capitalize on sunlight availability. They do all of their growing and reproduction during the time when sunlight reaches the forest floor. This hike will explore the incredible beauty of Shenks Ferry. Participants will learn to identify common spring ephemeral wildflowers and explore their fascinating ecology. \nWhat to Expect and How to Prepare: This will be a 2-mile out-and-back hike on a gravel and dirt trail. The trail surface is mostly smooth\, but there are a few short rocky sections and slight elevation changes. This event is for ages 8 and up (participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult). There is a port-a-john available on site. Hikers should dress for the weather\, wear comfortable shoes and bring drinking water. \nWhere to Meet: At the Shenks Ferry Wildflower Preserve trail kiosk\, just past the yellow gate off the parking area. \nRefund Policy: These events usually sell out. If you are unable to attend this event after purchasing a ticket\, please let us know so we can open a spot to someone on the waitlist. Refund requests must be made at least 48 hours before the event. \nAnimal Policy: Service animals active or in training are welcome. Please leave all pets at home. \nCancellation Policy: This event will be held rain or shine\, with cancellation for severe weather made at the time of the event. If the Conservancy reschedules the event\, attendees will be emailed\, and tickets will be automatically moved to the new date. If the Conservancy cancels the event\, attendees will be notified via email when possible and refunded. \nPhoto Credit: Michelle Johnsen \n\n\nThank you to our generous sponsor Brookhills Investment Group for making educational programming about Shenks Ferry Wildflower Preserve and the native plants it protects possible.\n\n\n\nThank you to our generous annual sponsors for making this event possible!

SUMMARY:Habitat Advocate: Qigong - Mindful Movement for Gardeners
DESCRIPTION:Explore mindful movement to tend to your best habitat restoration tool – your human body!\n\n\nWhether you are seeking gentle warm-ups to prevent injury or meditative motions to connect to the spaces you steward\, Qigong offers a way to easefully warm\, transform\, and activate energy in your body. \nParticipants will explore the philosophy of Qigong\, a practice developed in China thousands of years ago\, and practice mindful movement forms in a group setting as insight for later personal practice. Please wear comfortable clothing for gentle movement. \n \nThe Lancaster Conservancy has protected over 11\,000 acres of natural lands\, which are critically important to supporting biodiversity. Smaller patches of native habitats spread throughout urban landscapes are also essential to creating corridors of habitat – food and refuge – for wildlife. This is why we are offering our Habitat Advocate classes at Tec Centro in Lancaster City. \nThe cost of the Habitat Advocate classes covers instructor fees. If the cost of this class is prohibitive\, please reach out to Keith Williams\, VP of Engagement and Education\, at kwilliams@lancasterconservancy.org. \n \nYour Presenter\nElyse Jurgen\, M.Ed\, CBLP\, CERP\, owner of Waxwing EcoWorks Co.\, is a community collaborator inspired by rebuilding ecological literacy and biodiversity with her team of ecological practitioners. Ample hikes and plant community observations in nature spark her imagination\, bringing a rare blend of art and science into her practice. Her work deepens your connection to place and empowers you to take meaningful action to maximize your land’s potential to support wildlife and enhance human well-being. \nShe is certified as an Ecological Restoration Practitioner (CERP)\, Chesapeake Bay Landscape Professional (CBLP)\, Permaculture Designer\, and earned an Ecological Gardening Certification from Mt. Cuba Center. She holds a Master’s Degree in Environmental Education\, 7-12 Biology Teaching Certification\, and participated in Cornell University’s Civic Ecology program. \nElyse is a Qigong Level 1 Instructor in training. \n \nAbout this Class\nOpen for general admission\, no prerequisite necessary for this class! SUMMARY:PDF: The Last Picture Show
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Zoetropolis Cinema Stillhouse on Thursday\, April 16 at 6:30 PM as we begin the next three-film sequence in our America 250 series: Community in the American Landscape. \nOur first film is Peter Bogdanovich’s The Last Picture Show (1971)\, a haunting portrait of a small Texas town in decline. Set in the 1950s but made in the early 1970s\, the film reflects on loneliness\, fading institutions\, fractured relationships\, and the slow erosion of communal life. It asks a question that still feels urgent today: what holds a community together\, and what happens when those bonds begin to fray? \nThis new three-film sequence explores American community across very different landscapes and histories. The Last Picture Show will be followed by Lone Star and Killer of Sheep\, each offering a distinct vision of shared life\, memory\, struggle\, and belonging in America. \nThe evening will include a brief introduction before the screening and a post-film discussion afterward. \n Zoetropolis Cinema Stillhouse\n Thursday\, April 16\n 6:30 PM \nCome early\, grab a drink\, and join us for the start of a new cinematic conversation about community\, memory\, and the American landscape.
