SUMMARY:Phenology Hike at High Family Nature Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Come help us observe at High Family Nature Preserve with the science of phenology!\n\n\nPhenology is the science of seasonal change in nature\, using observations collected over time to see how these changes affect flora and fauna. In partnership with the USGS Phenology Network and Nature’s Notebook\, this workshop will teach you the science of phenology and how you can collect and contribute your own observations as a volunteer scientist. This information helps us to be better stewards of our ecological communities and helps our stewardship team make management decisions for our nature preserves. The data we collect is not only useful to us\, but to hundreds of phenology projects around the region and nation! \nLearn more about this community science project at https://www.lancasterconservancy.org/engaging-our-community/phenology/. \nWhat to Expect: Join our newest phenology team volunteers for our first group hike and learning experience through the meadow and woods at High Family Nature Preserve. Find out what species we’re watching and how observational changes over time will help us learn how our ecological restoration efforts are taking shape. This event is for ages 13 and up (participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult). \nWhat to Bring: Dress for the weather and bring a notebook or\, if you have an existing account/app with USGS My Nature Notebook\, your smart phone or tablet. There is a port-a-john available across the street at Old Trolley Line Park. \nWhere to Meet: We will meet at Old Trolley Line Park and walk across the street together to High Family Nature Preserve. \nEvent Leader Bio: Peggy Eppig is an environmental historian and dynamic conservation educator who offers a hands-on approach to every theme from deep-time history to 21st century conservation methods and practices. She brings over 30 years of interpretive\, experiential education experience for all who have an interest in saving nature for this and future generations. \nAnimal Policy: Service animals active or in training are welcome. SUMMARY:Habitat Advocate: Gardening with Native Plant Communities
DESCRIPTION:Explore how to move from site analysis of your space to a robust native plant palette well suited for wildlife!\n\n\nHave you experienced the challenge of sifting through the multitude of online resources to design a community of plants that will thrive together? Using reference landscapes\, such as Lancaster Conservancy preserves\, we will explore approachable tools to move a monoculture of lawn towards a biodiverse habitat. \nParticipants will be given two helpful guides to aid in their own habitat designing. \n \nThe Lancaster Conservancy has protected over 11\,000 acres of natural lands\, which are critically important to supporting biodiversity. Smaller patches of native habitats spread throughout urban landscapes are also essential to creating corridors of habitat – food and refuge – for wildlife. This is why we are offering our Habitat Advocate classes at Tec Centro in Lancaster City. \nThe cost of the Habitat Advocate classes covers instructor fees. If the cost of this class is prohibitive\, please reach out to Keith Williams\, VP of Engagement and Education\, at kwilliams@lancasterconservancy.org. \n \nYour Presenters\nElyse Jurgen\, owner of Waxwing EcoWorks Co.\, is a community collaborator working to rebuild ecological literacy and biodiversity through hands-on ecological gardening experiences in South Central PA. She is certified as a Chesapeake Bay Landscape Professional and Ecological/Permaculture Designer\, along with earning an Ecological Gardening Certification from Mt. Cuba Center. She has a master’s degree in Environmental Education\, 7-12 Biology Teaching Certification\, and participated in Cornell University’s Civic Ecology program. \nElyse works alongside homeowners in a participatory approach to their gardening for wildlife needs\, infusing educational opportunities during the design\, installation\, and stewarding process. She invites homeowners to deeply engage with their land to maximize its potential in enhancing human well-being and supporting dwindling wildlife populations. \n \nAbout this Class\nNote\, you must have taken the prerequisite “Habitat Advocate: Building Biodiversity in our Community” prior to taking this course. Learn more about Habitat Advocate classes and certification here. \nAttendees ages 16 and over are invited but must be accompanied by an adult if younger than 18. \n \nRefund/Cancellation Policies\nRefund Policy: If you are unable to attend this event after purchasing a ticket\, refund requests must be made at least two weeks before the event. \nCancellation Policy: This event will be held rain or shine\, with cancellation for severe weather made at the time of the event. If the Conservancy reschedules the event\, attendees will be emailed and tickets will be automatically moved to the new date. If the Conservancy cancels the event\, attendees will be notified via email when possible and refunded. \n \nPhoto Credit: Elyse Jurgen of Waxwing EcoWorks Co. \n \nThank you to our host Tec Centro and partners Waxwing EcoWorks Co. and the Spanish American Civic Association (SACA)!\nThank you also to our incredible Annual Sponsors for their generous support!
