SUMMARY:Habitat Advocate: Lepidoptera ID & Host Plants
DESCRIPTION:Learn to identify lepidoptera (moths and butterflies) and the plants that host them!\n\n\nDid you know that when you view a diverse open meadow\, you’re unknowingly watching thousands of complex relationships play out on a tiny scale? Our pollinators are a crucial cog in our ecosystem\, though much of their life cycle goes unseen by the naked eye. There is a great variety of pollinators\, from our larger lacy-winged moths and butterflies to tiny hardworking native bees and flower flies. Come take a closer view at the secret life of our native (and non-native) pollinators and plants in one of Lancaster’s native plant meadows as we identify Lepidoptera and more in the field and learn about lesser-known plant-pollinator relationships. \nParticipants will take home a copy of the Xerces Society resource book\, “Habitat Planning for Beneficial Insects.” \nThe Lancaster Conservancy has protected over 11\,000 acres of natural lands\, which are critically important to supporting biodiversity. Smaller patches of native habitats spread throughout urban landscapes are also essential to creating corridors of habitat – food and refuge – for wildlife. \nWhere to Meet: Please note that this class will meet at Muhlenberg Meadow at Lancaster County Central Park\, 548 Golf Road\, Lancaster\, PA \nThe cost of the Habitat Advocate classes covers instructor fees. There are no restrooms available on site. Dress for the weather and wear sturdy shoes. Bring a red-lensed headlamp if you have one\, if not some will be available to borrow. Hiking poles may be desired for water crossing. Bring any snacks or drinks you may wish to have. The final capstone entails practicing an independent scaled ecological garden design project and a short hands-on service project with your graduating cohort. \nUpon completion of this final capstone design project\, students are given a take-home kit: native wildflower seeds\, a hori-hori knife\, and Conservancy swag. \nParticipants are responsible to provide their own sturdy shoes\, sun and bug protection\, and refillable water bottle. Please bring a packed lunch to enjoy as part of the mid-day break of this workshop. \n \nThe Lancaster Conservancy has protected over 11\,000 acres of natural lands\, which are critically important to supporting biodiversity. Smaller patches of native habitats spread throughout urban landscapes are also essential to creating corridors of habitat – food and refuge – for wildlife. This is why we are offering our Habitat Advocate classes at Tec Centro in Lancaster City. \nThe cost of the Habitat Advocate classes covers instructor fees. She is certified as a Chesapeake Bay Landscape Professional and Ecological/Permaculture Designer\, along with earning an Ecological Gardening Certification from Mt. Cuba Center. She has a master’s degree in Environmental Education\, 7-12 Biology Teaching Certification\, and participated in Cornell University’s Civic Ecology program. \nElyse works alongside homeowners in a participatory approach to their gardening for wildlife needs\, infusing educational opportunities during the design\, installation\, and stewarding process. She invites homeowners to deeply engage with their land to maximize its potential in enhancing human well-being and supporting dwindling wildlife populations. \n \nAbout this Class\nNote\, you must have taken all required classes in the Habitat Advocate series before taking this class.
