SUMMARY:Habitat Advocate: Building Biodiversity in Our Community
DESCRIPTION:Join other curious conservation peers for this introduction to native habitats!\n\n\nJoin other curious conservation peers for this introduction to designing\, building\, and stewarding native habitats! This is the introductory class for the series and is required for a majority of the other classes as well as for those wishing to complete a Habitat Advocate Certification. Gain baseline awareness of why conservation landscaping is a multifaceted approach in solving our water\, climate\, and habitat crises. The scope of the Lancaster Conservancy Habitat Advocate Certificate program will also be shared. \nStudents will receive a binder of compiled native habitat resources ($30 value). \nThe Lancaster Conservancy has protected over 11\,000 acres of natural lands\, which are critically important to supporting biodiversity. Smaller patches of native habitats spread throughout urban landscapes are also essential to creating corridors of habitat – food and refuge – for wildlife. This is why we are offering our Habitat Advocate program at Tec Centro in Lancaster City. \nThe cost of the Habitat Advocate classes covers instructor fees. If the cost of this class is prohibitive\, please reach out to Keith Williams\, VP of Engagement and Education\, at kwilliams@lancasterconservancy.org. \n \nYour Presenters\nLinda Ferich retired from a career in emergency and occupational health nursing in 2013 and became a PA Master Naturalist. She coordinates the Lancaster Conservancy’s Community Wildlife Habitat program\, a partnership with National Wildlife Federation. Through this program\, Lancaster County has become the first county in PA to become a certified NWF Community Wildlife Habitat. \nLinda enjoys doing property assessments to teach how to develop habitat and control stormwater. Linda studies native plants and designs ecological gardens as a certified Chesapeake Bay Landscape Professional and student of Mt. Cuba Center’s Ecological Gardening program. She and a few conservation-minded friends formed the Lancaster Native Plant Alliance\, a chapter of PA Native Plant Society. The alliance promotes the use of native plants in all landscape settings through collaboration\, education\, and advocacy. \n \nAbout Habitat Advocate Classes\nNote that this introductory course is required as a prerequisite before taking most of the other following classes in the Habitat Advocate series to ensure all students have a shared baseline of understanding on the topic of wildlife habitat and conservation landscaping. Future classes will build on the information learned in this class. \nAttendees ages 16 and over are invited but must be accompanied by an adult if younger than 18. \n \nRefund/Cancellation Policies\nRefund Policy: If you are unable to attend this event after purchasing a ticket\, refund requests must be made at least two weeks before the event. \nCancellation Policy: This event will be held rain or shine\, with cancellation a day in advance for severe weather. If the Conservancy reschedules the event\, attendees will be emailed and tickets will be automatically moved to the new date. If the Conservancy cancels the event\, attendees will be notified via email and refunded. \n \nThank you to our host Tec Centro and partners Waxwing EcoWorks Co. and the Spanish American Civic Association (SACA)!\n \nPhoto: Elyse Jurgen

SUMMARY:Habitat Advocate: Green Mulch - Native Plants for Layered Landscape Design
DESCRIPTION:Kick the mulch habit! Learn how to integrate native groundcovers (“green” or “living” mulch) into your garden.\n\n\nDo you find yourself in a seasonal habit of spreading wood mulch in your garden beds to suppress weeds? In this interactive workshop\, learn how to nurture a new land ethic of cultivating a layered landscape by integrating native groundcovers (“green or living mulch”) in your garden. Through mimicking natural landscapes\, you can transform the chaos of a weedy mess into a legible garden for the benefits of wildlife and watersheds! \nParticipants will practice a scaled design in the workshop and receive the take-home secret ecological gardening “recipe” that makes a native garden swoony to the eye and more easeful to steward! \nThe Lancaster Conservancy has protected over 11\,000 acres of natural lands\, which are critically important to supporting biodiversity. SUMMARY:Habitat Advocate: Plant Speak
DESCRIPTION:Come learn from the wisdom of plant life!\n\n\nPlant Speak is an invitation to practice sitting with\, listening to\, and communicating with plant life. Whether a dandelion or a mighty oak\, the flora we love have much wisdom to share with us. We will ground into the ancestral wisdom of Blanzeschweze\, a PA Dutch word for plant talking\, and Mothaitheacht\, an Irish word that describes recognizing another being’s sentience. \nThrough creative expression\, guided meditation\, and group discussion\, participants will learn to hone their listening skills\, trust their intuition\, and remember an ancient and inherent way of relating to the natural world. Bring curiosity\, an open heart\, and journaling tools for your creative process! \n \nThe Lancaster Conservancy has protected over 11\,000 acres of natural lands\, which are critically important to supporting biodiversity. Smaller patches of native habitats spread throughout urban landscapes are also essential to creating corridors of habitat – food and refuge – for wildlife. If the cost of this class is prohibitive\, please reach out to Keith Williams\, VP of Engagement and Education\, at kwilliams@lancasterconservancy.org. \n \nYour Presenter\nErin Sweeney (she/they) is a healing practitioner\, movement + mindfulness instructor\, writer\, student of herbalism\, and antiracist group facilitator based on Conestoga-Susquehannock land\, also known as downtown Lancaster\, PA. She is a queer white person whose ancestral lineages root her to Scotland\, Ireland\, Germany\, and France. Erin is curious about how community and land shape us\, the relationship between personal and collective healing\, and how building relationships of connection and reciprocity to place\, people\, and ancestors can support us on the path to collective liberation. You can learn more about Erin and her work at her website www.erincaitlinsweeney.com. \n \nAbout this Class\nOpen for general admission\, no prerequisite necessary for this class! This class is one of three Art + Culture Classes in our Habitat Advocate series. For those looking to complete their Habitat Advocate Certificate\, only one of the Art + Culture classes need to be completed. Attendees ages 16 and over are invited but must be accompanied by an adult if younger than 18. \nLearn more about Habitat Advocate classes and certification here. \n \nRefund/Cancellation Policies\nRefund Policy: If you are unable to attend this event after purchasing a ticket\, refund requests must be made at least two weeks before the event. \nCancellation Policy: This event will be held rain or shine\, with cancellation for severe weather made at the time of the event. SUMMARY:Habitat Advocate: Lepidoptera ID & Host Plants
DESCRIPTION:Learn to identify lepidoptera (moths and butterflies) and the plants that host them!\n\n\nDid you know that when you view a diverse open meadow\, you’re unknowingly watching thousands of complex relationships play out on a tiny scale? Our pollinators are a crucial cog in our ecosystem\, though much of their life cycle goes unseen by the naked eye. There is a great variety of pollinators\, from our larger lacy-winged moths and butterflies to tiny hardworking native bees and flower flies. Come take a closer view at the secret life of our native (and non-native) pollinators and plants in one of Lancaster’s native plant meadows as we identify Lepidoptera and more in the field and learn about lesser-known plant-pollinator relationships. \nParticipants will take home a copy of the Xerces Society resource book\, “Habitat Planning for Beneficial Insects.” \nThe Lancaster Conservancy has protected over 11\,000 acres of natural lands\, which are critically important to supporting biodiversity. Smaller patches of native habitats spread throughout urban landscapes are also essential to creating corridors of habitat – food and refuge – for wildlife. \nWhere to Meet: Please note that this class will meet at Muhlenberg Meadow at Lancaster County Central Park\, 548 Golf Road\, Lancaster\, PA \nThe cost of the Habitat Advocate classes covers instructor fees. If the cost of this class is prohibitive\, please reach out to Keith Williams\, VP of Engagement and Education\, at kwilliams@lancasterconservancy.org. \n \nAbout the Presenter\nSophia Gilbart is a Pheasants Forever Farm Bill Wildlife Biologist working out of York and Lancaster counties. She graduated from McDaniel College in Maryland with a degree in biology and acted as a Grassland Plant Ecology intern at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in Virginia before returning to Pennsylvania to work with Pheasants Forever. She developed a passion for pollinators during her undergraduate research at McDaniel while studying plant-pollinator interactions in the experimental meadow at McDaniel Environmental Center. \n \nAbout this Class\nNote\, you must have taken the prerequisite “Habitat Advocate: Building Biodiversity in our Community” prior to taking this course.
