SUMMARY:Volunteer Workday at Clark Nature Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Be a part of the solution and give back to nature!\n\n\nJoin us as we work on invasive plant removal as part of a comprehensive eco-restoration program for Clark Nature Preserve. We will be using hand tools to remove invasive shrubs and weeds. This work directly contributes to restoring native ecology and protecting regional biodiversity. \nWhat to Expect and How to Prepare: We will use hand tools to remove invasive shrubs and weeds. The work involves using loppers and hand saws to cut shrubs at their base. Some of the shrubs have thorns. All tools and work gloves are provided. Dress for the weather and wear clothes you don’t mind getting muddy or torn. Sturdy pants are recommended due to the presence of thorns. Bring drinking water. There is a port-a-john on site. This event is recommended for ages 12 and up (participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult). \nAnimal Policy: Service animals active or in training are welcome. Please leave all pets at home. \nCancellation Policy: This event will be held rain or shine\, with cancellation decided at the time of the event for severe weather. If the Conservancy reschedules the event\, attendees will be emailed\, and tickets will be automatically moved to the new date. SUMMARY:Exploring Beginner Astronomy
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of beginner level astronomy while we observe the night sky!\n\n\nHave you ever wanted to learn more about the stars and planets? Join us for an evening under the stars as we learn more about the importance of darkness and how to capture images of the night sky. In this program\, attendees will be introduced to astrophotography\, navigation of the night sky\, learn basic constellations and astronomical objects including the moon\, important stars and any visible planets. \nWhat to Expect and How to Prepare: Please arrive between 8:30 and 9:00 p.m. – the program will start at 9:00 p.m. We ask for your promptness to avoid light pollution and noise disruption. We will be setting up in an open field area or along the universally accessible (UA) trail at Clark Nature Preserve. Please arrive promptly to set up your night sky viewing space in the meadow or on the UA trail prior to the program start time of 9:00 p.m. \nPlease dress appropriately for the weather. Personal insect repellent is recommended. Binoculars and telescopes are highly suggested – there will be a few telescopes for shared viewing. We recommend bringing a chair (reclining recommended!) or blanket. Water or non-alcoholic beverages and snacks are permitted. We recommend downloading a flashlight app on Android or iPhone with a red light function or bringing a headlamp with a red light setting. No white light is to be used during this event. There will be a port-a-john on site. Appropriate for ages 12 and up (participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult). \nNote: Lancaster Conservancy nature preserves are closed for regular visitation from dusk to dawn\, except for select Conservancy-led educational events. \nAbout the Presenter: George Eppig will be co-leading this event. George was raised in Maryland\, about 30 minutes north of Baltimore. Growing up\, he always had an interest in nature and was taking trips with his mom regularly to places like Algonquin\, Nova Scotia\, or Maine. After graduating from Penn State University\, he took a job working as a deckhand aboard a pungy schooner named The Lady Maryland\, which is where he discovered a love photography. Seeing incredible sights while working aboard the ship prompted him to want to share what he was seeing with others\, and so he bought his first camera to begin a now 18-year long journey to capture nature and tell meaningful stories about our world. When not out taking photographs\, George is a stay-at-home dad to his two amazing boys ages 4 and 2\, and enjoys spending time with them along with his incredible wife\, Rachel. \nRefund Policy: These events often sell out. SUMMARY:An Incredible Journey: Birding Along the Migratory Pathway
DESCRIPTION:Come explore the world of Pennsylvania's migratory visitors!\n\n\nEach year\, a variety of bird species travels thousands of miles between their summer homes in the US and Canada to their winter breeding grounds in Central and South America. The Susquehanna River valley is an important location along the migratory pathway\, providing crucial habitat where birds can rest and refuel on their journey. Songbirds\, shorebirds\, waterfowl\, and raptors can be seen and heard easily in the fall months on most of the trails and preserves. Your event leader\, Sarah Gotwols\, will help you explore the world of Pennsylvania’s migratory visitors and sharpen your observation skills as a birder. \nWhat to Expect: The Lloyd Clark Universal Access Trail will be used for the entirety of this event\, making this event friendly to those with varying mobility needs. Expect some stillness as we observe the wide-open sky to see avian species on the move. There is a port-a-john available on site. This event is for ages 10 and up (participants must be accompanied by an adult if younger than 18). \nWhat to Bring: Please bring binoculars if you have them\, drinking water\, and any snacks or personal supplies you may want. Dress for the weather and wear appropriate shoes. A portable chair or seat may be useful. DESCRIPTION:Join our community-based science program as we observe the plants and creatures that inhabit the meadow at Clark Nature Preserve!\n\n\nJoin our phenology volunteer team as we walk the Lloyd Clark Universal Access Trail around the meadow to observe and log our findings for the species we’re watching including birds\, native grasses\, wildflowers\, trees\, and insects.
