SUMMARY:Phenology Hike at High Family Nature Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Come help us observe at High Family Nature Preserve with the science of phenology!\n\n\nPhenology is the science of seasonal change in nature\, using observations collected over time to see how these changes affect flora and fauna. In partnership with the USGS Phenology Network and Nature’s Notebook\, this workshop will teach you the science of phenology and how you can collect and contribute your own observations as a volunteer scientist. This information helps us to be better stewards of our ecological communities and helps our stewardship team make management decisions for our nature preserves. The data we collect is not only useful to us\, but to hundreds of phenology projects around the region and nation! \nLearn more about this community science project at https://www.lancasterconservancy.org/engaging-our-community/phenology/. \nWhat to Expect: Join our newest phenology team volunteers for our first group hike and learning experience through the meadow and woods at High Family Nature Preserve. Find out what species we’re watching and how observational changes over time will help us learn how our ecological restoration efforts are taking shape. This event is for ages 13 and up (participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult). \nWhat to Bring: Dress for the weather and bring a notebook or\, if you have an existing account/app with USGS My Nature Notebook\, your smart phone or tablet. There is a port-a-john available across the street at Old Trolley Line Park. \nWhere to Meet: We will meet at Old Trolley Line Park and walk across the street together to High Family Nature Preserve. \nEvent Leader Bio: Peggy Eppig is an environmental historian and dynamic conservation educator who offers a hands-on approach to every theme from deep-time history to 21st century conservation methods and practices. She brings over 30 years of interpretive\, experiential education experience for all who have an interest in saving nature for this and future generations. \nAnimal Policy: Service animals active or in training are welcome. Please leave all pets at home. \nRefund Policy: If you are unable to attend this event after purchasing a ticket\, refund requests must be made at least 48 hours before the event. \nCancellation Policy: This event will be held rain or shine\, with cancellation a day in advance for severe weather. DESCRIPTION:Join Lancaster Conservancy and Muhlenberg Botanical Society on this exploration of spring plants!\n\n\nJoin Muhlenberg Plant Society and Lancaster Conservancy on this exploration of High Family Nature Preserve. This interpretive hike will include exploration of the rich woodlands\, diabase geology\, and spring ephemeral wildflowers. This preserve features and meadow\, savannah\, and mature woodlands. \nWhat to expect and how to prepare: Be prepared for a 1.5-mile hike with some elevation change and potentially muddy conditions. We will make frequent stops to learn about the plants we are seeing. Bring drinking water and dress for the weather. There is a port-a-john across the street at Old Trolley Line Park. \nWhere to Meet: We will meet across the street at Old Trolley Line Park and walk over to High Family Nature Preserve together. \nAnimal Policy: Service animals active or in training are welcome. DESCRIPTION:Be a part of the solution and give back to nature!\n\n\nJoin us as we work on invasive plant removal as part of a comprehensive eco-restoration program for the High Family Nature Preserve. We will be using hand tools to remove invasive shrubs and weeds. This work directly contributes to restoring native ecology and protecting regional biodiversity. \nWhat to Expect and How to Prepare: We will use hand tools to remove invasive shrubs and weeds. The work involves using loppers and hand saws to cut shrubs at their base. Some of the shrubs have thorns. All tools and work gloves are provided. \nDress for the weather and wear clothes you don’t mind getting muddy or torn. Sturdy pants are recommended due to the presence of thorns. Bring drinking water. There are restrooms on site. \nWhere to Meet: Old Trolley Line Park\, Elizabethtown\, PA \nAnimal Policy: Service animals active or in training are welcome.
