Lancaster is a stronger music city than most people give it credit for, but what might be more surprising is the range of musical styles produced here. Pick a night, and you can hear an Amish gospel duo, a cosmic post-punk trio, an eight-piece ska band, and a string quartet playing Taylor Swift covers, all without leaving the county.
We’ve pulled together a list of ten local bands in Lancaster, along with a sample of their music and (when possible) where you can see them live.
1. Charlie Muench
A founding member of beloved Americana trio The Stray Birds, Muench tours as bassist with songwriter Joe Pug, and runs a small studio. He released his first solo album, “You Were Dreaming,” as Charlie in the Question Mark in June 2024. Maya de Vitry plays on it. Mike Newman mastered it in Lancaster.
Upcoming Shows: Charlie will be performing on May 8 at West Art (https://www.westartlanc.com/concert/charlie-in-the-question-mark)
2. Bad Hints
Bad Hints adds an unconventional quality to Lancaster’s local music scene, often surprising listeners. They’ve been showing up in some of the year’s most interesting local lineups.
Upcoming Shows: You can catch Bad Hints tonight at West Art (https://www.westartlanc.com/concert/lamplight-hemlock)
3. Jason Mundok
Mundok is half of the Lancaster dreampop duo Here Inside, alongside Anne Kirby. He also records and performs solo as J Mundok, leaning into ambient and experimental art rock. Mundok has been writing since the early 1990s, and last year he debuted a new project called JASON.
Most recent: Future shows will be posted at Jason’s website (https://www.jmundok.com/jasontheband/)
4. Ben & Rose
The country-gospel duo with Amish roots, deep tradition, and a fast-growing reach. Their recordings with producer Conrad Fisher have introduced songs like “Slowly But Surely” and “Lord I Don’t Need a Mansion” to listeners well outside their community, and Rose’s voice has earned more than a few comparisons to Dolly Parton.
Upcoming: Ben and Rose have two shows at the American Music in August (https://amtshows.com/show/ben-rose-with-conrad-fisher)
5. Sir Dominique Jordan
Born and raised in Lancaster City, Dominique calls himself an “artivist,” which is to say poet, musician, organizer, and educator at once. He fronts the hip-hop and R&B band The Prolific Steppas, runs the Artivist Corp youth mentorship organization, and started the Block Rite cleanup program. The NAACP named him 2023 Activist of the Year.
Upcoming Shows: Dominique hosts a monthly music and poetry event at the Appell Center called The Outlet (https://appellcenter.org/show/the-outlet-7/)
6. Corty Byron
Corty has been a fixture of the Lancaster scene since his teens. His sound is Americana roots, soaked in vintage R&B and blues. The Central PA Music Hall of Fame named him Best Blues Artist of the Year in 2024.
Upcoming: Corty Byron has a show at Tellus360 this coming Saturday (https://www.tellus360.com/events/corty-byorn-friends/)
7. Big Fat Meanies
This band has a sound that pulls from ska, punk, funk, metal, and musical theater without picking a lane. Their latest EP, “Bad Hand,” is streaming, and they are nominated for several awards at the 2026 Central Pennsylvania Music Awards.
Upcoming Shows: You can see The Big Fat Meanie live at the Music for Everyone Sound Factory Benefit Show on May 10 (https://events.humanitix.com/west-art-welcomes-big-fat-meanies-and-the-music-for-everyone-sound-factory)
8. Vivace Live String Quartet
A Lancaster quartet that swaps Bach for Taylor Swift and performs both flawlessly. Founded by violinist Sara Irvine in 2008, Vivace plays weddings and corporate events most of the year, but they also book the occasional public show in town.
Upcoming Shows: Friday, May 8, 2026, “Pop Favorites on Strings” at West Art (https://events.humanitix.com/pop-favorites-on-strings-a-candlelit-concert-by-vivace-live)
9. Hadassah Edith
Hadassah’s voice gets compared to Jeff Buckley and Tracy Chapman, sometimes in the same song. Based in Lancaster, she moves between jazz, folk, indie, and rock with ease. Her latest album, “Scared of the Sun,” took her five years to make. It was worth it.
Upcoming Shows: Watch out for upcoming shows at Zoetropolis and West Art.
10. The Nielsen Family Band
Lancaster’s resident “space country” quintet, made up of Rob Nye, Kate Seifarth, John Spurlock, Jordan Capizzi, and Doug Hynes. The band blends cosmic, interstellar vibes with country melodies. I can’t stop listening.
Upcoming Shows: The band performed at The Lititz Shirt Factory and Zoetropolis earlier this year. We’re closely watching calendars for their next show.
